Former Pannone men celebrate year of success with new business venture

Barry O'Neill and John Cotton of Edgmoor Financial Planners

A financial planning firm, which was launched by two former Pannone employees, is celebrating having £77m of assets under management after it’s first year.

John Cotton and Barry O’Neill were on the board of the law firm Pannone’s financial planning arm, before and after it became part of Aussie outfit Slater and Gordon prior to setting up Edgmoor Financial Planners in 2016.

“To say we’re delighted with the way things have gone would be an understatement,” said Cotton. “It couldn’t have gone better and we’re very grateful to clients old and new who have helped us succeed.”

Edgmoor, which works predominately with partners, employees and clients of law firms, has just recruited a new administrator and is about to move to larger premises within its existing Centurion House base on Deansgate.

O’Neill said: “This is the sector we know best and where we’re confident of providing sound advice based on our knowledge of the needs of the legal profession.”

The firm specialises in several areas, including investments for those placed under the Court of Protection and works closely with a number of law firms in this area, most notably Irwin Mitchell and Salford-based Hugh Jones Solicitors, two of the largest COP firms in the country.

“To have that amount of trust placed in us by a law firms with the status of Irwin Mitchell and Hugh Jones is very gratifying,” said O’Neill, adding, “people placed under the COP are some of society’s most vulnerable and we are aware of our responsibilities to them, their families and relatives.”

In addition to advising and investing for COP clients, Edgmoor works on investments and financial planning for personal injury and clinical negligence claimants.

Cotton said: “once again we are starting to work closely with major law firms like 2020 Legal. People faced with life changing situations need good sensible advice and the solicitors we deal with know us and trust us to handle their client’s affairs professionally and properly.”
