Northern Powerhouse minister named to replace Percy

A new Northern Powerhouse minister has been named following the resignation of Andrew Percy.

Jake Berry, the MP for Rossendale & Darwen, will replace Percy as the third minister to hold the position since it was created two years ago.

Percy, MP for Goole, held the role for less than a year and announced his resignation on Instagram. PM Theresa May had reportedly asked him to continue in the role, but he declined.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Percy said: “Was a privilege to be asked to continue serving in my role in Government as a Minister, but I have reluctantly decided to step down and leave the Government.

“I thank the Prime Minister for offering me this role again but I have decided to pursue other challenges. She continues to enjoy my full support from the back benches.

“I will not be making any further comment or doing any media on my decision.”

Berry attended Liverpool College and the University of Sheffield before training as a lawyer in the City of London. He became MP for Rossendale & Darwen in 2010. He announced his appointment on Twitter.
