Aparthotel gets green light in city centre

Commercial property company Knight Frank has secured planning permission for a new aparthotel and commercial space on Renshaw Street in central Liverpool.

The scheme by YPG Developments will provide 114 serviced apartments, as well as a gym, cycle store, laundry room and reception behind the distinctive retained façade of an existing building, that for 40 years was the Rapid hardware store.

Designed by Day Architecture a new five-storey block will be set back from the façade allowing the creation of a roof terrace before the building steps back again with an additional two storeys.

Approval follows detailed discussions with Liverpool City Council and Historic England.

Knight Frank senior planner Emily Roberts said: “We have been involved in the scheme from an early stage to find the best solution for the site which has an existing heritage building, is next to the Duke Street Conservation Area and sits in the World Heritage Site buffer zone.

“This scheme retains the character while at the same time creating a high quality aparthotel and new retail facilities at street level to invigorate this important part of the city centre.”

YPG managing director Ming Yeung said: “We are delighted to have secured planning permission for this development on Renshaw Street.

“The proposed use will not only further the economic development of the area by bringing an active use to a currently vacant site but will also enhance the living environment of the immediate and surrounding area.’

It is the third successful planning application Knight Frank has secured for YPG with work now underway on a student apartment scheme at Devon Street and a development of townhouses and apartments on Hurst Street.
