Environmental firm celebrates 20th year with record revenue of £3.26m

The LK Group team

Greater Manchester land and built environment consultancy and land remediation specialist The LK Group has laid the groundwork for future growth after reporting record financial results in its 20th year.

Bouyed by a housing and construction boom in its key markets of Manchester, Liverpool and West Yorkshire, the business, based in Radcliffe, near Bury, has announced that its turnover grew by 11% to £3.26m in 2016.

The LK Group, which provides expert contaminated land and geotechnical consultancy and specialist land remediation on behalf of 250-listed housebuilders and public sector bodies, also saw profits rise to 10% over the same time period.

The company says most profits will be reinvested in the business to fuel further expansion as it aims to capitalise on the plans of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to build 227,000 homes over the next 20 years and Liverpool City Council’s ambitions to build 29,000 homes over the next 15 years.

The business was founded in 1997 by PJ Leyden, who came out of early retirement to establish Leyden Kirby Associates with well-known civil engineer, Philip Kirby.

This family business is now run by managing director Conor Leyden with other elements of the company managed by a small team of specialist directors – Clair Leyden, Colin Crompton, Dave Anderson and Dr Paul Quimby.  Leyden is still active in the business as chairman.

As part of its ambitious growth plans, the company has increased its capacity and experience across a range of service areas including expert contaminated land, geotechnical, flood risk and drainage consultancy, project management, asbestos surveying, specialist land remediation, and the surveying, treatment and disposal of Japanese Knotweed and other invasive species.

As a result, The LK Group has delivered many large-scale projects across the North West and Yorkshire including land remediation of Urban Splash’s new project at Irwell Riverside House, the largest development of off-site manufactured homes in Manchester; project managing the public realm works which have transformed Altrincham and Stretford Town Centres; and project managing the delivery of seven new fire stations on behalf of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Conor Leyden said: “To report record financial results in our 20th anniversary year is a real testament to the exceptional reputation we have created for maximising the value of our client’s land and buildings over the past two decades.

“As a business, we are passionate about kick-starting new housing developments and aim to reduce the costs that developers face when remediating land by between 50% and 90%, to help increase the viability of residential construction.

“Over the past two decades, we have tackled brownfield land of all descriptions, having designed, project managed and successfully completed remediation schemes for sites previously deemed to be economically undevelopable.”

Following a 50% increase in site investigations and land remediation work since 2012, The LK Group now employs 35 people across its Manchester and Liverpool offices.
