£48m Bolton Interchange set for September opening
Transport bosses have announced that the new £48m transport interchange for Bolton will open to the public on Sunday, September 3.
The interchange on Great Moor Street, delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Bolton Council, will be Greater Manchester’s largest, and will replace the existing Bolton Bus Station on Moor Lane.
It will provide better passenger information, waiting and ticketing facilities in a lighter, brighter and safer environment, TfGM says.
An impressive skylink bridge, constructed by Network Rail and Murphy Group, will connect the interchange with Bolton railway station.
Financed through the Greater Manchester Transport Fund, the interchange will offer an attractive entry point to the town centre and support wider regeneration in the area.
TfGM Committee chair Cllr Andrew Fender said: “I’m really looking forward to 3 September when the new interchange opens to the public.
“I’m sure passengers will be impressed with the building and its excellent facilities.
“As always, I’d like to thank motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and co-operation while work on the interchange has been taking place.”
Bolton Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris said: “It is fantastic to see this exciting development nearing completion and due to open to the public in early September.
“The interchange, together with the reinstatement of platform five at the railway station and the investment in electrification, will bring Bolton’s transport facilities firmly into the 21st century.
“Together with the new office block on Great Moor Street and the work being carried out in Newport Street, it will be a magnificent new gateway to our town.”
TfGM will close the existing bus station after the last bus has left in the early hours of Sunday September 3, with the new interchange opening for the first Sunday morning bus service.
The small interchange next to the railway station on Newport Street will also close to bus services from Monday August 28, with services running from the existing temporary bus stop nearby on Newport Street until Sunday September 3, when they will transfer to the new interchange.
