Manchester clubs spend big as Premier League set to break record

With a month to go until the end of the summer transfer window, Premier League clubs are set to break last year’s £1.1bn spending record, with the Manchester teams contributing more than a third of the total to date.

The current window has seen £910m worth of deals made, with City and United’s spending accounting for nearly £350m. At the same stage last year, clubs had spent £480m, just more than half the current total, according to analysis from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.

City have already surpassed the record for the most spent by an individual club in a single transfer period, with the signings of Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy costing more than £200m.

Meanwhile, United spent big on the signing of Romelu Lukaku, in a deal with the potential to rise to £90m, as well as moves for Eric Lindelof and Nemanja Matic.

Average transfer expenditure per Premier League club is £46m so far this window, while this figure was £58m for the entire 2016 summer transfer period.

Chris Stenson, manager in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: “The combination of record broadcast, commercial and match day revenues continues to fuel extraordinary levels of transfer expenditure in the Premier League. Clubs have already spent more in this window than they did throughout the entire summer 2015 window.

“With one month still to go, we expect this summer’s total to comfortably surpass the previous record of £1.165bn, set in summer 2016. Indeed, last summer, £685m – almost 60% of total transfer expenditure – was spent in the final month of the window.”
