Liverpool’s historic India Buildings is to become a UK Government Hub, with 3,500 HM Revenue and Customs staff occupying the most of the space.

The move will see HMRC become one of the largest employers in the city.

India Buildings will become one of the state-of-the-art regional centres of HMRC which is transforming its estate into 13 modern and cost-effective regional centres.

The former home of the Passport Office, India Buildings is in the heart of the city and has excellent access to transport links and good digital infrastructure required by a modern tax authority to create great online services.

The Liverpool Regional Centre will provide HMRC with the opportunity to strengthen its relationships with the local community and become a visible and active contributor to the local area.

HMRC has acquired around 270,000sq ft and will occupy 10 floors of India Buildings with staff moving in from 2019.

Jon Thompson, Chief Executive of HMRC, said: “HMRC has a large and long-established presence in Liverpool and the North West, and the new regional centre demonstrates our commitment to Liverpool, the region and its economy.

“The signing of the lease for India Buildings gives us the opportunity to bring an iconic Liverpool building back to life, while providing staff with the flexible and collaborative working environment that is expected from a modern organisation – making the centre a hub of highly-skilled career opportunities.”

Richard Wharton, JLL director of office agency, who advised the Government, said: “We carried out a measured selection process which took in to account wide ranging factors including cost efficiency. HMRC’s decision to move to India Buildings, which has been an iconic feature of Liverpool’s skyline since the 1930s, is a huge boost for the city.”

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “This is welcome news which will not only deliver an economic boost by increasing the number of workers employed in this part of the city, but also secures the future of one of our most loved buildings.

“It is a huge vote of confidence from Government and another shot in the arm for our ongoing renaissance which is seeing us attract investment not just in new developments but also in regenerating landmark buildings.”
