Thumbs up for Moxy hotel at Spinningfields

Planning permission has been granted for KE Hotels and Henry Boot Developments’ Silk Works scheme – a 145-bed Moxy branded boutique hotel, the first such facility in Manchester’s Spinningfields district.

The nine-story 58,800sq ft property is to be built on Atkinson Street and Scott Place, weith work starting within six months.

Moxy was launched in 2016 with its first hotel in Milan. It debuted in the UK in December last year at Aberdeen International Airport.

A millennial-focused boutique hotel concept, it combines smart service and technology with contemporary style aimed at ‘fun hunter travellers’.

Dean Thompson, regional manager for HBD in the North West, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Khanna Enterprises to bring the Moxy brand to Manchester – the Silk Works is a beautiful heritage building, so it will be great to see it back to its best and bringing something new to the city.

“We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback since submitting the change of use application back in May and the team is looking forward to getting started.”

Anil Khanna, director of Khanna Enterprises, said: “KE Hotels are looking forward to developing and operating Moxy by Marriott in Spinningfields, which has become the city’s leading business destination and a place to eat, drink and shop. It is very exciting for this location to be the only hotel in Spinningfields.”

NJL Consulting is advising on planning and ICA Architects are the appointed architect for the scheme.

HBD currently has more than 600,000 sq ft under development in Manchester, including the Silk Works and Kampus, its £250m mixed-use scheme, a JV with Capital & Centric.

The developer has also recently purchased the Equitable Building fronting St Ann’s Square, the iconic former home of Habitat.
