Trophies help Manchester United to revenue of £581m-plus

Success in two cup competitions has contributed to a 13% increase in revenue to £581.2m for world-famous football club Manchester United.

The club’s full year accounts ending on June 30 also show adjusted EBITDA ROSE 4% TO £199.8m. However that success looks unlikely to be repeated next year with that figure expected to fall to between £175m and £185m.

On the field, the Old Trafford side won the Europa League – entitling them to play in the Champions League this season – and the League Cup.

The Red Devils also generated record operating profits of £80.8m – up 17% on the previous year.

However, this came at a cost with the wages rising to £263.5m, an increase of £31.3m, or 13.5%, over the prior year, primarily due to an increase in first team salaries, following investment in the first team squad.

Meanwhile, the club signed 12 sponsorship deals during the period.

The clubs executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: “We concluded a successful 2016/17 season with a total of three trophies (including the Community Shield) and a return to Champions League football. The year saw us set record revenues of over £581m and achieve a record EBITDA of £199.8m.

“We are pleased with the investment in our squad and look forward to an exciting season.”

The club is expecting revenue to remain stable, between £575m and £585m, in 2018.
