Deloitte has hosted its fourth annual Diwali celebration dinner in Manchester for businesses with links to India.

The professionals services giant has worked with MIDAS and the Department of International Trade to help deliver the strategy that will enable the city to build its profile in India and strengthen opportunities around trade and investment.

Held at the Manchester Museum, the Diwali event was attended by more than 100 business leaders including a 50-strong delegation from India.

This included some of India’s largest companies such as global IT giants Wipro and Tech Mahindra, who are all keen to gain greater access to the Manchester market.

Tech Mahindra recently opened a new 100-person facility in Salford Quays to expand its presence in the UK. Atul Kunwar, president and chief technology officer at the company, said he was “very excited about the opportunity in Manchester for his business.”

Jo Ahmed, global employer services partner at Deloitte in the North West, said: “It is important that we celebrate the festival of Diwali in Manchester given that we have such a huge Indian diaspora here and it’s fantastic to see so many businesses turn out.

“For many years, Manchester has been known for fostering a culture of innovation, especially in the tech and creative sectors. Having MediaCityUK and other thriving industries in the area appeals to the likes of Tech Mahindra who have set up here. Equally, the strength of the universities and accessible talent pools makes it a really attractive place to do business.

“Working together with MIDAS, we have a person on the ground in Bangalore who is responsible for representing Manchester and helping to boost our trade and investment links. We know that if we make the effort now, then in the long run it will be good for our city and, most importantly, for business.”
