Work to transform the former Salford Reds rugby ground into an £11m housing development has completed.

The site, now called The Willows, comprises 103 family houses, apartments and bungalows.

As a tribute to the heritage of the club, the streets on the new scheme have been named after former players including Lance Todd Close and Gus Risman Street.

The development includes 81 homes for affordable rent and 22 properties available for shared ownership.

Colette McKune, group deputy chief executive at City West’s parent company, ForViva, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed families in to their new homes and to be marking the completion of this project which has helped transform a derelict and challenging site into a thriving community.

“At a time when demand for affordable homes outstrips supply in Salford, bringing forward new developments like The Willows that help meet local people’s housing needs is a top priority for ForViva.”

City West, which is part of the ForViva Group, secured £2.75m of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to support the development of the site, which got underway in September 2015.

Contractor Watson Homes worked alongside Grays Architecture on the scheme.

City West will be delivering 780 new properties on sites across Salford by 2018 as part of parent group ForViva’s wider plans to build 1,200 properties across the North West.

The landlord has also started work on a £3.2m apartment complex on Corporation Road in Eccles earlier this month which is set to be completed next September and will deliver 33 properties.
