Legendary pub where Blackpool FC was founded back in business

Businessman and former Blackpool Mayor Robert Wynne has opened a new £350,000 pub and micro-brewery in one of the town’s most historic buildings after signing a six-figure funding deal with the Royal Bank of Scotland.

1887 The Brew Room is housed in what was formerly known as The Blue Room, the legendary building where Blackpool Football Club was founded (then called The Stanley Arms pub).

It had been empty and derelict until Wynne’s acquisition of the building last summer, but renovation works have seen it restored to its former glory.

Now Wynne has created his very own micro-brewery “West Coast Rock Brewery” which is housed at the back of the pub.

Four ales are currently being brewed on site including the firm’s speciality craft lager – 1887 – which is sold directly from the tanks.

There is also a viewing gallery in the pub where patrons can view the ale’s being produced whilst they enjoy their drinks. 16 new jobs have also been created as a result of the launch.

The pub only serves beers and ales that are either brewed on site or by regional brewers – no ales from major international brands are available.

It also offers a wide variety of specialist cocktails, ciders and spirits alongside a separate chocolate bar serving milkshakes and coffees and a smokehouse offering food.

Wynne, who runs the establishment with his wife Gaynor, said: “We couldn’t be happier with the new pub. It is proving to be very popular with both local customers and visitors to the area and trade has got off to a brilliant start.

“As with many towns across the country, unfortunately there are many derelict pubs in the area but the closure of The Blue Room was a real disappointment to many in Blackpool.

“When the building came up for auction I knew its acquisition was something I had to pursue. Not only does the building hold real emotional value for local residents due to its link with the football team, but it is a fantastic space which offered us the potential to create something completely unique.

“Despite our close proximity to Winter Gardens, this area of town has unfortunately become quite run down and I hope that the opening and ongoing success of the pub will help to regenerate the area and encourage other businesses to open nearby.”

Karen Plant, relationship manager at Royal Bank of Scotland said: “We are so pleased that we have been able to support Robert and Gaynor to put their vision of 1887 The Brew Room into practice.

“They have created a brilliant venue which is completely different to anything else in the local area and I am sure it will continue to be a great success.”
