Plan submitted for bid to convert former offices into homes

Atherton House

A planning application has been submitted for the redevelopment and extension of the former office building known as Atherton House in Manchester’s Old Trafford district.

CERT Property, the Manchester-based independent investment and development company, is aiming to create a new residential scheme.

The property on Talbot Road is directly opposite the proposed new University Academy 92 campus.

CERT secured permitted development rights to provide 48 apartments late last year. The new extension, designed by Manchester practice Elevate Architects, will add a further 12,000 sq ft to the building providing 18 duplex apartments over two floors.

CERT managing director Howard Lord said: “We were very keen not to lose the original architectural language of the building and are looking to deliver what we believe to be an honest conversion of this mid-century building.

“The existing white tiled façade will be enhanced by the installation of light gold sliding aluminium panels, which will create a distinctive and contemporary new look to the building. We love that sixties style architecture is becoming fashionable again and this project will be a tribute to that era of design.”

Lord added: “We are excited to be delivering this project in an area that is set to benefit from a significant amount of investment over the next couple of years and I believe the properties will meet the rising demand in this area from young professionals for contemporary and high quality living accommodation.”
