Premaitha strikes deal for IONA non-invasive prenatal test in Egypt

Manchester-based biotech company Premaitha Health has signed an exclusive agreement with a partner to offer its IONA non-invasive prenatal test across Egypt.

The deal means Premaitha has secured its first Egyptian customer – a private reference testing laboratory in Cairo.

It is expected the laboratory will be fully installed later this year and will provide the IONA test – which detects Downs syndrome and other genetic disorders in unborn children – to its network of hospitals and clinics across the greater Cairo region.

With a population of more than 20 million people in Cairo alone – and approximately 2.8 million births a year throughout Egypt – the unnamed partner plans to establish additional installed laboratories for the IONA test in other strategic locations.

Premaitha chief executive Dr Stephen Little said: “We are delighted to enter another country, particularly one with both a significant population and an appetite for high quality genetic screening.

“Today’s announcement is further demonstration of delivering against our strategy of geographic diversification. We look forward to working closely with our new partner in Egypt, which we hope will become another significant market for Premaitha.”
