Manchester joins forces to pay tribute to victims of Arena attack

Tribute on AJ Bell building

Businesses, workers and the people of Manchester came together to pay their respects on the first anniversary of the terror attack which left 22 people dead.

Crowds gathered at special events in the city centre to remember those who lost their lives and were injured in the arena attack.

A memorial service was held at Manchester Cathedral which was attended by families and friends of the 22 victims as well as emergency workers who attended the scene.

Prince William also attended the service alongside politicians Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

A minute’s silence was held across the city for the victims. Later in the evening a special event was held in Albert Square which was attended by thousands of people.

And businesses have also been playing their part in the commemorations.

One of the city’s most successful firms of recent years marked the occasion by hanging banners from its building in Salford.

Stockbrokers AJ Bell hung messages of support from its offices which featured the distinctive bee which has come to act as a symbol for the city.

And Adrian Ellis, who is chair of Manchester Hoteliers’ Association, has spoken movingly about the impact the outrage has had on the city and his industry.

He said: “The unimaginable tragedy of one year ago will always be hard to come to terms with as 22 innocent people lost their lives and many more had their lives changed forever.

“During those immediate hours after the bomb went off hoteliers across the city gave people fleeing the Arena shelter and safety while working in unison with the emergency services.

“As a hotel community our thoughts continue to be with those who died, their loved ones and the people who suffered life changing injuries as a result of the attack.”

He added: “What’s happened since May 22, 2017 in many communities across the region has been nothing short of incredible.

“Support and solidarity have been amongst the themes and I’m sure that will shine through once again during today’s one year anniversary tributes.

“Ultimately the spirit of togetherness in Manchester has shown the world that its people aren’t scared of those who terrorise and divide.

“Visitors continue to come to this city to enjoy the many attractions on offer which is testament to the strength of attitude everyone has shown over the past 12 months.”

Hundreds of businesses and organisations from football clubs to police forces have been expressing their support in social media sites.
