Huge logistics scheme to create 1,650 jobs in North West

Up to 1,650 new jobs could be created at a new £73m logistics development in Wigan.

Specialist developer DB Symmetry has unveiled plans for the massive development at the site of a former colliery near the town.

The proposed development, known as Symmetry Park, would be located to the south of Winstanley, between Junction 25 of the M6 and the A49 Warrington Road.

The announcement comes as Wigan Council publishes its Employment Land Position Statement showing a shortage of employment sites in the area.

Andrew Dickman, director of DB Symmetry, said: “It’s exciting times for Wigan, with the advent of HS2 and the Council’s ambitious plans to grow the local economy and revitalise the town centre.

“New employment sites like Symmetry Park Wigan will mean that the town gets its share of Greater Manchester’s economic growth and can provide jobs for people closer to home.”

He added: “We have chosen this site due to its direct access to the M6, meaning logistics vehicles do not need to pass through residential areas.

“It could provide high-quality jobs and apprenticeships for people across Wigan which will create lasting benefits for the local economy.”

The plans for 1.44 million sq ft of employment space represent a construction investment of £73m and would add £3m a year in business rates payments towards the council’s income.

Two drop-in consultation events will be held in May where local residents can find out more about the plans and job opportunities on offer.

The site is currently agricultural land and was a former colliery, with open cast mining continuing up until the early 1980s.

While it is within the Green Belt, the site has been identified in the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) as part of an employment site.

The proposals include high quality logistics buildings, alongside green open space and recreational routes for residents to enjoy.

There will be a green buffer between the development and the nearest housing in Winstanley.

DB Symmetry are expecting to submit the planning application in Summer 2018 with a decision from Wigan Council likely before the end of the year.

The firm has a number of similar schemes at sites across the UK.

It has a land portfolio of 3,100 acres, made up of more than 1,000 acres/15.4 m sq ft with planning permission for logistics use, with a further 2,074 acres being promoted through the planning process.
