KPMG serves up free sports day for Liverpool schools

The Liverpool office of business advisory firm KPMG provided a free sports activity day for more than 400 schoolchildren during last week’s Williams BMW Liverpool International Tennis Tournament.

The event, at Liverpool Cricket Club, included games to promote numeracy among pupils, and provided advice for staying safe online.

Children from 14 Merseyside schools were given the opportunity to try out a variety of sporting pursuits, including tennis, with coaches on hand to show them the ropes.

Staff from the firm’s Princes Parade office also treated the youngsters to a series of sports-themed games designed to promote the importance of numeracy in a fun and engaging way, including basket ball maths and times tables football pool and darts.

As an added bonus, the professional services firm’s cyber security team were on hand to give those in attendance tips and advice about staying safe online, in line with the firm’s partnership with Cyber Champions, a national initiative that promotes digital literacy and internet safety.

The day formed part of KPMG’s sponsorship of The Williams BMW Liverpool International Tennis Tournament 2018.

The 17th edition of the tournament took place between June 21-24.

Euan West, office senior partner at KPMG in Liverpool, said: “We want to do everything we can to help more local young people get involved in sport.

“Organising the event was a great way for us to give the school kids in attendance the chance to try their hand at a new activity and show how maths is such an important part of sport. Hopefully we’ve inspired the next winner of the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament.”

He added: “Last month, as a firm, we helped launch the first ever National Numeracy Day, so we were very pleased we could top off an amazing day of sport with a series of games in line with our UK-wide drive to encourage the improvement of essential numeracy skills.”
