Go ahead for new district centre in Tameside

Part of the proposed scheme

Maple Grove Development has gained consent for a £13m development in Hattersley, Tameside.

The firm, advised by Indigo Planning, recei ed reserved matters consent from Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council after getting the green light at planning committee.

This follows on from the outline consent which was obtained in 2015.

The £13m development, designed by Bowman Riley Architects, will be located in Hattersley, and will deliver a new district centre comprising a 1,794 m2 foodstore, nine retail units, totalling 3,716 m2, and a 167 m2 drive-thru café/restaurant with associated parking and landscaping.

The existing buildings and structures on the site will be demolished to make way for the new district centre development which is due for completion by Christmas 2019.

The development was designed taking into account the numerous site constraints.

The modern design of the units is of high architectural quality. The design is driven by a modern, corporate image.

There are subtle differences between the design of the units and distinctive features which set this retail scheme apart from others.

The scheme incorporates a significant amount of landscaping.

A brand new footpath in the southern section of the site connects to Stockport Road and increases accessibility and connectivity to and within the site.

Trees, hedges and shrubbery will be planted along the northern, eastern and western site boundaries which screens and improves the environment.

Andrew Dewhurst, director of Maple Grove Development, said: “We are thrilled to obtain reserved matters consent for the new district centre in Hattersley, a scheme which has been in the pipeline for years.

“The scheme is commercially driven with a Lidl foodstore as the crucial anchor, and three other retailers currently already on board.

“Through the granting of this reserved matters consent, the council’s long-term aspirations for a new district centre in Hattersley and the many associated benefits, such as job creation, will be realised.”

Nick Fillingham, regional director of Indigo Planning, said: “We engaged extensively with Tameside Council and worked closely with planning officers throughout the reserved matters application to develop a high-quality scheme.

“We are delighted to secure reserved matters consent following a positive planning committee meeting.”

Sandy Livingstone, executive director of property with housebuilder Onward Homes, added: “Onward Homes has worked tirelessly in partnership with Tameside Council and Homes England for over a decade to regenerate the Hattersley and Mottram estate.

“Along with Barratts, the volume house builder, Onward has invested over £250m to revive the former Manchester City council overspill from its long term decline.

“Hattersley is really on the up and Maple Grove’s development will make a major contribution to its continuing evolution as a desirable place to live and work.”

Maple Grove Development expects a start on site in January 2019, with the development complete by Christmas in the same year.
