Nexus Labs, a pioneering medical education start-up, has completed a seed funding round to launch its first product, SurgicalTeaching.com.

This is a digital platform aimed at enhancing the learning experience of students and doctors around the world.

The funding came from the GM&C Life Sciences Fund, managed by Catapult Ventures, and Alderley Park Ventures, managed by BioCity.

Surgical Teaching aims to simplify the theoretical and practical learning experience of medical students and doctors.

Through combining CGI animations, real-life video footage and user performance analytics, Surgical Teaching complements medical school curriculum and helps to prepare students for both their examinations and life as a doctor.

Nexus Labs was founded by Dr Glyn Estebanez, a surgeon who is passionate about the use of digital technology to elevate the learning experience and learning potential of users.

Its talented team will be relocating to Alderley Park, where they will continue to develop SurgicalTeaching.com and its innovative digital education content.

In addition to the investment, Chris Spencer, a digital health advisor with Catapult Ventures, will be acting as an advisor to the company.

Until April 2017 Chris was CEO of EMIS Group Plc, where he had held senior roles since 1999, including as a director of EMIS Professional Publishing.

Glyn, chief executive of Nexus Labs, said: “I’m extremely pleased to welcome the GM&C Life Sciences Fund and BioCity as investors in Nexus Labs and welcome Chris as our expert advisor.

“I am very confident that the support that Catapult Ventures and BioCity bring, as well as Chris’s vast experience, will help us to raise the bar of medical education and, in turn, improve the quality and safety of patient care.”

Dr Vijay Barathan, life science partner with Catapult Ventures, said “We are excited by this opportunity and fully support the team who have developed a modern approach for delivering medical education.”

Dr Imelda Juniarsih, from BioCity, said: “What impressed us about Nexus Labs is the team’s ability to combine the expertise in media production and surgical knowledge to provide the optimal learning experience.

“We are confident that Nexus Labs will make a difference in medical education globally.”

Chris Spencer, digital health advisor with Catapult Ventures, added: “With a background in digital health and prior experience as an educator and publisher, I was immediately drawn to the Nexus Labs proposition.

“I hope I’ll be able to help them further develop an already impressive solution to the training needs of future and present clinicians.”
