A trade mission from Rhode Island and New England, USA, headed by the secretary of commerce for the State of Rhode Island, was welcomed to Manchester by audit, tax and consulting firm RSM.

The event was an exclusive reception to forge stronger ties with the US.

As part of the UK visit the delegation, comprising seven US businesses and a team of commerce and tourism officials, explored reciprocal trade opportunities, in addition to hearing more about the latest incentives for UK businesses looking to set up in Rhode Island.

The trade mission, which has been organised by the Chafee Centre for International Business at Bryant University, Rhode Island Commerce Corporation and the US Department of Commerce, brings together Rhode Island businesses offering unique products and services with potential UK resellers, agents and distributors, as well as seeking suppliers and customers.

Stefan Pryor, secretary of commerce for the State of Rhode Island, said: “More and more, international companies are realising the benefits of doing business in Rhode Island – including our competitive tax structure, potent economic development tools, and high quality of life.

“Companies with UK roots, including Finlays and Virgin Pulse, have chosen to plant their flag in our state, and we look forward to exploring opportunities with other companies that are looking to expand in America.

“In particular, we are excited to trade notes and consider possibilities with our colleagues in Manchester.”

Eric Solomons, RSM’s office managing partner in Manchester, said: “The US market presents a wealth of reciprocal and investment opportunities for North West firms, and today’s event was a great forum to discuss trade opportunities, forge strong working relationships between US and regional business, and, ultimately, showcase what Manchester and the North West region has to offer.”
