N-power plant workers hospitalised after incident

Heysham power station

Three workers at the Heysham 1 nuclear power plant, in Lancashire, have been hospitalised.

It follows a serious incident at the site on Monday evening.

EDF, which owns the plant, revealed that the three had been taken to hospital after an “accidental steam release”.

Reports claim that one worker had suffered burns, another a broken hip, and the third a broken back.

EDF’s statement also stated that the Monday night incident was not linked to any nuclear processes, and that there was no danger to public safety.

It was reported that all three casualties were conscious and speaking when they were taken to hospital.

Five fire crews attended the incident at 22:40 GMT and remained at the site for more than two hours as a precaution.

A spokeswoman for EDF said a “full investigation” would now be carried out to determine the cause.

She added: “It goes without saying that everyone’s thoughts are with our three colleagues who have been injured.

“We will be doing everything we can to support them and their families while they recover.”

The spokeswoman said: “There was no risk to the public during the incident, which is now under control.

“Safety is our overriding priority and we will investigate how this happened.”
