Supermarket to close warehouse with loss of 100 jobs

Iceland

Budget supermarket Iceland has announced it is to close a warehouse in Manchester with the loss of more than 100 jobs.

The warehouse in the Trafford area of the city opened just over 18 months ago.

The Park Pick Centre was created to deal with  deliveries of online orders – work which had by carried out by 17 stores across Greater Manchester.

The supermarket has said that the centre cannot be run profitably and a consultation is being carried out with the 102 staff at the site.

The centre on Trafford Park Road is due to close at the end of March.

The firm, which has its headquarters in Deeside in North Wales, said additional jobs will be created in Greater Manchester to handle the return of online picking in stores.

Those employed at Trafford Park who have been placed under consultation  and will be ‘informed of all available opportunities.

Iceland has confirmed it has begun consulting with staff at the centre ‘with a view to closing this facility at the end of March 2019’.

The store was criticised last summer when deliveries in the Manchester area arrived late.

At the time the supermarket apologised and blamed the delays on the temporary closure of its Oldham store.
