Space component manufacturer doubles its premises size in Crewe

US-based Micross Components has expanded its specialised UK manufacturing operation in Crewe.

The high-reliability semi-conductor supplier has moved from its historic base on Weston Road to a new unit at Orion Park, doubling their floor space to 14,000 sq ft and retaining 35 highly-skilled jobs.

The new unit will enable Micross to accelerate its expansion plans and continue the impressive growth experienced over the past three years.

Micross Crewe provides modified semi-conductor components for a range of markets including aerospace, defence, industrial, medical and space sectors, including both the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA.

The firm’s high-reliability semi-conductors are specially designed to perform under the extreme conditions associated with space travel, with Micross components having been used on more than 100 successful space missions to date.

The new unit was officially opened by Micross chairman, Victor Vescovo, who flew in from their headquarters in Florida.

Cheshire and Warrington Business Growth Hub – a service delivered by the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) – worked closely with partners including The Skills and Growth Company and the Department for International Trade, to provide Micross with a wide range of complementary support services.

This included specialist advice on market and export opportunities within advanced manufacturing and space sectors, advice on marketing the business, recruitment and training, along with helping to identify areas for innovation and growth.

Victor Vescovo said: “The investment in our facilities and staff in Crewe forms a key part of our strategic growth plan and will enable the business to continue on our mission to be the global supplier of specialty, high reliability, semi-conductor components designed and manufactured to the highest quality standards.

“We are very grateful for all the expertise and support provided to help us grow and maximise opportunities here in the UK and beyond. Our new premises will provide the perfect platform for further growth.”

Philip Cox, chief executive of Cheshire and Warrington LEP, added: “Micross is a leading example of the global innovation and technology expertise that exists in the sub-region.

“Inward investment is vital for the continued growth of our economy and so I’m delighted that Micross has chosen to invest further in growing its specialised Crewe facility.”

Julian Cobley, managing director of The Skills & Growth Company, said: “We are delighted that Micross, a high-tech growing business, continues to develop its specialised facilities here. It’s testament to this great business and their highly-skilled workforce.

“And seeing their components make the journey from Cheshire to outer space is truly inspiring.”
