A Manchester team from global investment bank GCA Altium has advised the UK’s leading independent mobile live games developer, Mediatonic, on an investment from Synova Capital.

Founded in 2005, and with headquarters in London, Mediatonic has launched more than 100 games in partnership with some of the world’s largest game publishers, including Scopely and Square Enix.

The company develops and manages the IP of multiple household games, including ‘Gears Pop!’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding World’.

The partnership funding, described by Synova as “a significant investment”, will support Mediatonic’s further growth, allowing it to invest in strategic partnerships, develop new titles and publish niche games by third party developers such as the top-selling ‘PC Building Simulator’ and the forthcoming ‘Good Company’.

This marks the latest deal in the gaming sector for GCA Altium, after the firm advised on the £217m IPO of Team17 last year.

Overall, GCA Altium has acted on 19 deals in the industry, having previously advised on transactions involving Zynga, Nintendo and King.

A GCA Altium team, led by Adrian Reed and including Jon Stead and Durgesh Panchani, provided exclusive sell-side M&A advice to the shareholders of Mediatonic.

Adrian Reed, managing director at GCA Altium, said: “Mediatonic is an ambitious games developer, and this significant investment by Synova will help further elevate its status in the global market. With such a strong performance, we look forward to watching the company’s future growth.

“With increasing numbers of IP-rich developers and publishers, the UK gaming space is proving particularly attractive to investors worldwide.

“As it stands, the global audience is estimated at over 2.5bn people and the market is on course to grow to £136bn by 2021, so this investment appetite is set to continue, providing a host of exciting opportunities.”
