Steelwork on site at St George’s Quay student scheme

The proposed scheme

Steelwork has now commenced at St George’s Quay in Lancaster, where a new student accommodation scheme is being built by Eric Wright Construction.

Designed by Manchester-based Just H Architects, the £25m scheme will provide a new student residential quarter.

The construction programme, which is due to be completed in August 2020, will deliver Just H Architect’s designs for the former brownfield site which was initially earmarked for development back in 2002.

The work will take the site, which sits on the banks of the River Lune, from redundancy into a new asset for the city, home to Lancaster University.

The designs for the scheme, which is being built by Eric Wright Construction for client U+I, will deliver 431 student bedrooms in a combination of clusters and stand alone studios.

Taking inspiration and visual cues from the former mill building that previously occupied the site, the use of traditional buff-coloured brickwork with deep set windows heavily references the industrial architecture of the area.

Another main feature of the scheme will be the restored Pump House and public space.

The pump house will provide retail and communal space with areas of landscaping and public realm that will complement and enhance the existing adjacent streets.

Rachael Oldroyd, from Just H, said: “All of our designs for St George’s Quay have been developed to promote a sense of place and reinforce local identity.

“The strategy for this scheme has been developed over several years so it is great to see work starting on site.

“We are looking forward to seeing our concepts become a reality, delivering the city of Lancaster with another fantastic student facility.”
