Morecambe’s Eden project due to open in four years’ time

Plans for the new scheme

A planning report has been drawn up into the £85m Eden Project planned for Morecambe Bay.

The first environmental scoping report for the proposed Eden Project North attraction has been submitted to Lancaster City Council.

The seaside attraction, which is being built on a former swimming pool site, will attract 760,000 visitors a year to the resort town.

The new visitor will be made up of five mussel-shaped domes rising to nearly 40 metres.

The domes will showcase re-imagined lidos, gardens, performance spaces, immersive experiences focused on the marine environment and observatories.

The new attraction is due to open in the spring 2023 following a two-year construction programme.

Eden estimates that the complex will attract around 760,000 visitors per year.

It would also have a 4,000-capacity outdoor arena designed for live music and entertainment.

David Harland, chief executive of Eden Project International, said: “This is an important milestone for Eden Project North.

“Having a positive impact on the internationally significant environment of Morecambe Bay is fundamental to our vision for this project.

“This report is the next step towards making Eden Project North a reality.”

The Eden Project has been working with Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Lancaster University, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster City Council on the scheme.

Each has contributed £250,000 towards the cost of designing and planning.

An additional £100,000 has been pledged by the Government.

The project has the backing of Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry.
