Work due to start on major traffic scheme on one of Manchester’s busiest junctions

Traffic delays

A major scheme designed to improve traffic at one of Manchester’s busiest junctions is due to start next month.

The work to remodel the roundabout at the foot of Princess Parkway in Hulme will start as another major scheme is finally completed.

Council bosses have announced that the junction under the Mancunian Way will be remodelled into two separate roads.

The work will start as the improvements on nearby Regent Road are finally completed.

The improvement works on Regent Road have seen traffic delays in the city centre for the last 12 months.

The remodelled junction will see the roundabout replaced by two roads allowing direct access to the city centre and the Mancunian Way from Princess Parkway.

A spokesman for the city council said pre-works are due to start this week.

The spokesman added: “This will consist of site clearance, compound set up and removal of street furniture.

“Traffic management will be localised to the work area and will cause minimal disruption.”

The Princess Road and Medlock Street roundabout improvement work is set to start next month following the completion of the Regent Road works.

The council added: “We want to carry out roadworks on Princess Road and Medlock Street roundabout – two key junctions – to help improve and reduce congestion along the Mancunian Way.

“There is currently a lot of congestion at these junctions, which causes long delays, especially at peak travel times.

“While these works take place, traffic management will be used to create ‘localised safety zones’ for the site workers.

“The main traffic management will not start until after the Regent Road scheme is complete, to ensure minimal travel disruption across the two schemes.

“We plan to start the main works late-September 2019, and we will share the plans and an animated visualisation of the scheme once the details have been finalised.”
