A Bury-based distributor of franking machines and mailroom equipment has announced its fourth recent acquisition, this time of GEM UK Mailing Solutions, in Tarleton, near Preston, for an undisclosed sum.

The Mailing Room (TMR) said that GEM’s senior personnel, Alex Muir and Pat Casson, have agreed to join TMR full-time, to assist with the transition process and, long-term, help accelerate the group’s ambitious five-year growth programme.

Established in 1982, GEM has built up a strong industry reputation, catering for the mailroom needs of local authorities and multinationals across the North, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.

It specialises in supplying automatic letter folding and inserting machines for bulk mailings, polywrap packaging equipment for magazines, newsletters and catalogues, and mailroom ancillaries like shredders, letter openers, booklet makers and pressure sealers for automating routine office chores.

Promising to save small business customers time and money and ensure their outgoing mail projects a quality image, GEM supports hundreds of direct business users, as well as a network of resellers dealing in specialised hardware.

“GEM is one of our long-standing trading partners, supporting the sales and maintenance of the Neopost folding and inserting range for our own customer base, and we know there will be a good natural fit between the two organisations,” said Ian Davidson, TMR’s group managing director.

“The reasoning behind the purchase is to broaden our mailroom solution set with additional technologies and extend our geographical reach within existing markets.

“We particularly want to expand our share of the developing folder-inserter sector, which is enjoying growth due to the increasing influence of GDPR, and GEM has a wealth of experience in this area, with Alex able to act as a product specialist and Pat employing his experience as a specialist field engineer.”

This year celebrating its 21st anniversary, The Mailing Room has built up a strong market presence in the private, public and voluntary market sectors, under the direction of former Pitney Bowes president of mailing solutions Europe, Ian Davidson.

Its head office operation in Bury hosts a customer service team and technical support specialists, as well as a warehouse distribution centre stocking new and replacement machines, spares and consumables, ready for next day delivery.

Preston-based GEM UK is TMR’s fourth recent business acquisition, joining Franking Direct of Essex, Mailing Systems of Somerset and MailServe of Sussex, which, between them, have added thousands of accounts to its customer base and greatly extended its geographical penetration.
