Major delays in Liverpool area as crash closes motorway in both directions

Major delays are expected in the Liverpool area this morning after the M58 was closed in both directions.

The motorway was closed after a lorry overturned near to the Switch Island junction.

The M58 is closed eastbound from A59 Switch Island to J1 Maghull Lane (Kirkby).

Traffic is being diverted via the M57 and A506 through Kirkby.

North West Motorways Police tweeted that both the eastbound and westbound carriageways will be closed for the foreseeable future and warned motorists to avoid the area.

Highways England said the M58 is was closed following a collision between a HGV and a car.

Westbound, the M58 is closed between junction 3 and the A59 at Switch Island.

Eastbound, the M58 is closed between the A59 at Switch Island and junction 1.

Diversion routes are in place:

Westbound: Exit the motorway at junction 3 and join the A570 northbound towards Ormskirk. Then join the A59 southbound towards Liverpool. Follow the solid black diamond diversion symbol.

Eastbound: Motorists are unable to join the start of the M58. Instead, join the M57 southbound. Exit the M57 at junction 6 and join the A506 northbound through Kirkby to then re-join the M58 at junction 1. Follow the solid black triangle diversion symbol
