MediaCityUK wins GM Chamber’s Building of the Year prize

GREATER Manchester Chamber of Commerce has awarded its Building of the Year prize to Peel’s MediaCityUK scheme at Salford Quays.

The complex has come under some criticism nationally for its architectural style, with industry magazine Building Design recently awarding the development its annual Carbuncle Cup.

However, the Chamber’s property & construction committee awarded it the top prize ahead of three other shortlisted contenders – Greater Manchester Police’s North Manchester Divisional Headquarters in Newton Heath, the new Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (MMUBS) and Student Hub building, and the newly-restored Ordsall Hall in Salford.

The award was presented at the Chamber’s annual property and construction dinner by Manchester City Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein at the Hilton Deansgate hotel last night.

Committee chairman Phil Cusack said: “This development makes a statement about our city region.

“It is of national economic significance and it shows the world that here in Greater Manchester we are capable of delivering best in class – whether it is in development expertise, public sector vision, functional design or construction delivery.

“MediaCity will contribute to the economic well-being of Salford, Manchester and the region for generations to come. This award recognises its importance in terms of the immense contribution it is already making.”
