Developers sought for former Ancoats hostel

A FORMER Victorian hostel for mill workers has been put on the market in Manchester by the North West Development Agency (NWDA).

The NWDA is looking for a developer for Jactin House, a 40,000 sq ft building in the heart of the city’s Ancoats district.

Two years ago the four-storey building was strengthened with steel beams and its brick walls and terracotta window sills were repaired in line with English Heritage guidelines.

Andrew Aherne, director at Lambert Smith Hampton, which is handling the sale, said: “This is a fantastic development opportunity, which is suitable for a variety of commercial uses.

“This site is the first to be released for redevelopment in quite some time, and follows the recent completion of a comprehensive refurbishment of the street scene in the area, which creates a unique, high-quality environment.”

Ancoats is the subject of a multi-million pound regeneration programme. It is Manchester’s original industrial quarter and is home to the world’s oldest steam-powered cotton mill complex.
