City to promote science offer at MIPIM

MANCHESTER is set to spell out plans for its Government-funded graphene hub at the MIPIM property event in Cannes today.

New Economy chief Mike Emmerich will host a talk titiled The Appliance of Science which he said would highlight how Manchester can maximise oportunities in scientific research on the back of the graphene hub.

The government is contributing £38m towards a new £45m hub set up to foster ways of commercially exploiting graphene, which is the thinnest, lightest and most conductive material in the world.

Property firm Bruntwood, which is currently the developer partner on the £21m business incubator at the Royal Eye Hospital site and a £60m redevelopment of Manchester Business School’s campus, will also spell out its strategy for the area.

Chief executive Chris Oglesby said: “We have very ambitious plans in the science sector which are the natural next step from our office ownership of 4.5m sq ft in Greater Manchester.”

Michael Ingall, chief executive of Allied London, said he will present Spinninfields next new building which will complete by 2014.

He said: “As developers and investors struggle to operate without debt, local authorities and their developer partners will need to be innovative in our approach to both attract the new economy and provide infrastructure for it, if we are going to do anything other than sit in the changing room.”
