SONAE Industria has closed its Knowsley chipboard factory with immediate effect, resulting in the loss of 220 jobs. The company, which has concluded its 90 day consultation with staff, said its trading position is "no longer financially viable" and that today (Friday 14th September) was its last day of production. Sonae said the factory's closure will result in the loss of 220 jobs, as well as 500 indirect jobs and £15m spent with suppliers in the North West.
