Manchester’s Cornerhouse to be renamed ‘Home’

MANCHESTER’S Cornerhouse cinema and Library Theatre will be renamed ‘Home’ when they move to a £20m purpose-built site at First Street.

The new venue, due to open in 2014, will have a 500-seat theatre and five cinema screens, as well as gallery and exhibition space.

Manchester agency Creative Concern was hired to come up with the name.

The arts building is part of a wider £80m Ask Developments scheme, just off Whitworth Street West, which will also include an 11-storey 208-bed Melia hotel, a 10-storey car park and 30,000 sq ft of restaurants, bars, and shops.

According to a statement the new name came out of a “detailed and collaborative research and consultation process, which involved more than 150 people including local residents, audience members and key partners from across the city, as well as an online forum where people could contribute their thoughts”.

Dave Moutrey, chief executive of the two arts organisations, first revealed the search for a new name in April. “Lots of people won’t like it, some people will,” he said.
