Wigan submits Westwood Park plan

WIGAN Council has submitted plans to build more than 400 homes on the derelict site of the former Westwood power station.

After a number of stalled schemes, the council wants to develop the 44-acre brownfield site into 430 houses with a local centre, and a centre for the Wigan Flashes area of special scientific interest.

The former railway line will become a new access route into the town centre, linking the A49 at Goose Green to the top of Poolstock, and then onto the existing dual carriageway on Riverway.

Cllr David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “These plans mark an important and welcome step forward for the area.  Earlier this year we consulted with residents in communities around the site and we’ve listened to the issues they raised.

“I am pleased that these development plans will boost employment, improve access to the town and to the Flashes.”
