Student flats on Odeon site set for approval

PLANS for a student block at the former Odeon cinema site on Liverpool’s London Road are set for approval next week.

The cinema, which dated back to 1934, was demolished in 2011 and is now surface car park.

Liverpool’s Pointfield Developments and Taylorson Developments, based in Manchester, have applied to build a six to 10-storey block with 440 student beds.

Day Architectural Design at Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire, is handling the application.

A report prepared by the council’s planning team, states: “The site is conveniently located to the University of Liverpool and LJMU campuses, as well as various educational and research facilities, and knowledge-based industries in the City’s Knowledge Quarter.

“This proposal therefore has the potential to assist in meeting an identified demand for student living and in achieving the University’s objective of consolidating a diverse, yet balanced range of student accommodation within the city centre.”
