Administrators appointed to Cumbrian care home

A company that owns a care home with 40 residents in Cumbria has gone into administration.

PKF in Manchester has been appointed to The Hemingway Group, the owner of Yanwath Care Home near Penrith, which employs 60 staff.

London-based Hemingway is owned by Strachan Visick whose sole shareholder is Richard Visick. His other investments include a 3% stake in stock market-listed Rockhopper, an oil exploration firm specialising in the Falklands.

PKF’s Kerry Bailey and Jonathan Newell are looking for a buyer and have appointed specialist care home management company, Wallace Management Services, to run Yanwath.

Ms Bailey said: “The care home has been visited and assessed as to quality and standards of care. All residents, staff and relatives have been sent notification and will be kept fully informed. The intention is to manage the care home to ensure that residents suffer minimal disruption.

“Steps have been taken to stabilise the trading position and lines of communication have been opened with the relevant regulatory authorities. We are committed to ensuring that all care standards are maintained and the home remains open. We are optimistic that a purchaser can be found for the home and are talking to interested parties.”

An inspection of Yanwath by the Care Quality Commission in October found that staff needed to improve the way medicines were managed.

Its report stated: “As part of this inspection we looked at medicines records, supplies and care plans relating to the use of medication. We found that people who used the service did not receive their medicines at the times they needed them and in a safe way. Appropriate arrangements were not in place in relation to the recording of medicines.”
