Town Centre Securities plans Ancoats conversion

PROPERTY Group Town Centre Securities is planning to convert AV Roe’s early Manchester aircraft factory into offices.

It has submitted a planning application for the work at the grade II-listed Brownsfield Mill, where AV Roe built bi-planes for the First World War.

Leeds-based Town Centre declined to discuss its plans but it has previously said the eight-storey building, fronting Great Ancoats Street and the Rochdale Canal, could offer a mix of leisure and retail space with 50,000 sq ft of offices.

The application is for a change of use and listed building consent.

The steam-powered mill was built in 1825 and AV Roe moved in in 1910 as the world’s first company registered solely as a manufacturer of aircraft.

It was later used as a warehouse and has been dormant in recent years.
