Old boy returns to lead Manchester Grammar

THE Manchester Grammar School has announced old boy Dr Martin Boulton – a former mining engineer- as its new High Master.

The Altrincham-born 45-year-old, who is currently the equivalent of deputy head at Westminster School in London, attended MGS’ sixth form from 1984-86.

Before starting his career in education Dr Boulton worked in the mining industry for DeBeers and also in corporate finance for Arthur Andersen.

He will join MGS in September, as the 43rd High Master, and replaces Dr Christopher Ray, who leaves to take up a post in Abu Dhabi.

Commenting on his new role, he said: “It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to return to The Manchester Grammar School as High Master. MGS is one of the country’s truly great schools and this is a very exciting time as it approaches its 500th anniversary.”

Chairman of MGS governors, Maurice Watkins CBE, said:  “Our recruitment process was spread across the UK and we have secured an outstanding academic who will lead MGS through its 500th anniversary in 2015 and beyond.

“His close affinity with the school, having been a pupil here, and his passion and belief in the ethos of MGS will bring enormous benefits for our new bursary appeal.”
