Care couple take over Southern Cross site

A COUPLE have expanded their care business after taking on a former Southern Cross care home near Bury.

Steve and Moira Durkin have renovated the 40-bed Abbeycliffe Care Home in Radcliffe and taken on 30 staff.

The work was financed with a £600,000 loan from Barclays.

The couple have been involved in care homes for 25 years and are joint owners with other family members of Abbeywood Residential Care Home in Tottington, Bury.

Mr Durkin said: “We specialise in providing high quality residential care and constantly re-invest to ensure all our homes provide uncompromising comfort and excellence in care. The new home will be a great addition to the group providing high quality facilities whilst at the same time ensuring that we retain the values and ethos on which our reputation has been built.”

Phil Johnson, senior Barclays business manager said: “Barclays is committed to using our industry expertise within the healthcare sector to support experienced and professional operators which is vital to a prosperous economy.”

Southern Cross collapsed in 2011 with huge lease liabilities and was broken up after landlords took control of various care homes.
