Gazprom in green energy deal

BUSINESS energy supplier Gazprom Energy, which has its UK base in Manchester has signed a 12-month power purchase agreement with a Scottish company.

Russian-owned Gazprom has agreed to buy 10 Megawatts of green energy from Scotland’s largest landfill gas site Avondale Environmental.

Avondale operates a waste landfill site in Polmont central Scotland and this amount of energy is enough to power thousands of micro and SME businesses.

Avondale generates renewable energy by harvesting methane from the ill site, which handles around 450,000 tonnes of municipal, commercial, industrial and hazardous waste every year.

Andrew Morris, manager of clean energy at Gazprom Energy, said: “Avondale is nationally significant player in the waste to energy industry, making this contract an exciting development for our embedded generation portfolio in the UK.

“We’ve structured a deal that will ensure Avondale can extract maximum value from its landfill gas generation, while making a significant renewable contribution to the UK’s energy needs.”
