Manchester Airport reports 10% May growth

MANCHESTER Airport welcomed more than 10% more passengers in May this year than in the same month last year as its mix of new, scheduled and low cost routes continued to deliver success.

The airport said 1.9 million passengers travelled it last month. The increase in numbers took Manchester over the 20 million passenger mark, during a 12 month period, for the first time since May 2009.

The airport’s 10.6% growth in May made it the best performer of any in the UK’s top 10 airports by size. It also marked the airport’s 13th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

The strong performance was attributed to the continuing strength of long haul destinations, such as Dubai, Washington DC, Chicago, Singapore, and easyJet’s new Moscow route.

Growth was also seen in the low cost market – Jet2, easyJet and Ryanair are all major players at Manchester.

Ken O’Toole, chief commercial officer at MAG, owners of Manchester Airport, said: “Reaching our target of 20 million passengers ahead of schedule was testament to an increasing network of destinations and the hard work we’ve undertaken to highlight this message across the North of England.

“We continue to see airlines bringing more routes on line for passengers using Manchester with new destinations such as Aegean’s service to the Greek capital, Athens, and Flybe adding their 19th destination from Manchester to Waterford in Ireland.

“The start of June saw Egyptair launch a new five times a week service to Cairo, proving that airlines are continuing to recognise the opportunity that Manchester provides in serving the North of England market and we want to continue to support further growth from our airlines.”
