Last orders for Pomona Palace

THE Peel Group subsidiary Manchester Ship Canal Developments has applied for permission to demolish the Pomona Palace pub.

The pub, now derelict, is well-known as it sits on the junction of Chester Road and Cornbrook Road in Old Trafford and is passed by thousands of motorists every day travelling into Manchester.

In an application submitted to the city council, the company said: “The pub has been vacant for some time as the business is not longer viable in this location. The cleared site will assist in the comprehensive regeneration of the wider area.”

It expects to carry out the demolition work in January, subject to planning. Peel holds the land through its ownership of the Manchester Ship Canal. It has so far focused on the former Salford Docks, to the west of the Trafford Road bridge, but the Pomona Docks behind the pub are grassed over and completely empty.

The pub takes its name from a long lost Victorian entertainment complex.
