United lead the way in £835m transfer spending spree

TRANSFER spending by Barclays Premier League clubs hit a record £835m in the summer window, up more than 30% on last summer, Deloitte has calculated.

Manchester United, with the late confirmation of a loan deal for Columbian striker Falcao and the completion of a deal for Dutch player Daley Blind, were the most active club in the summer window.

The Reds recorded the highest ever gross spend by a Premier League club in a summer transfer window, spending £150m, including the British record £60m capture of Angel di Maria and £29m spent on Ander Herrera from Atletico Bilbao.

Dan Jones, partner in the sports business group at Deloitte in Manchester, said: “This summer transfer window has again been one of records, with Premier League clubs spending more than in any previous transfer window…

“We continue to see the increased resources that Premier League clubs enjoy, as a result of improved broadcast deals, translate into investment in players. Last season the average Premier League club received over £25m more in central broadcast distributions than they did in 2012-13, which has helped fuel a new record spend this summer.”

The total only includes £6m from the loan fee of Radamel Falcao to United from Monaco, however – if the striker moves on a permanent basis at the end of the season that fee will form part of transfer spending in 2015.

The sums spent in England compare with £425m in Spain, £260m in Italy, £250m in Germany and £100m in France.
