Manchester enters top 30 of global universities

THE University of Manchester has risen three places to entered the rankings of the top 30 universities in the world.

According to the annual QS World University Rankings, compiled to help students make informed comparisons between their international study options, Manchester is the eighth best university in Britain behind the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London (joint second globally), Oxford and University College London (joint fifth), Kings London (16th), Endinburgh (17th) and Bristol (29th).

The rankings feature more than 800 universities around the world, and compare them across four broad areas of interest to prospective students: research, teaching, employability and international outlook.

The study shows science and technology-focused universities are increasingly making their presence felt in the top 50 of the QS World University Rankings.

The number one university was the  Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which also topped the charts in 2013.

With almost all science and technology-focused institutions either maintaining their position or climbing in the QS World University Rankings, it is clear that universities focusing on the so-called STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are in the ascendancy.

The University of Liverpool is ranked 123rd and the University of Lancaster 160th in the list.
