Labour conference ‘worth £25m to Manchester’

THIS month’s Labour Party conference in Manchester is expected to add £25.4m to the city’s economy.

Marketing Manchester, which led the bid to secure the conference, has estimated the figure based on the value of media coverage and the amount delegates and exhibitors will spend.

Around 11,000 are expected at Manchester Central from September 21-24 and there will be hundreds of fringe events across the city. It is the fifth Labour conference in Manchester since 2006.

City council leader Sir Richard Leese, a Labour councillor, said: “Events like this underline Manchester’s credentials as a major conference destination and help support our economy. Both of the main political parties have hosted conferences here in recent years and the feedback from delegates and other visitors has always been hugely positive.

“As the last conference before a General Election this year’s event has added resonance and I am pleased to welcome Labour back to our great city. Manchester is going to be on show to the world and I know we will demonstrate the warmth and vibrancy which makes our city special.”

Marketing Manchester says business tourism generates £823m a year for the Greater Manchester economy.
