Property briefs: Bowmer & Kirkland; Davitt Jones Bould; Eric Wright

THE ENGLISH Cities Fund (ECf) has appointed contractor Bowmer & Kirkland to deliver One New Bailey, a 125,000 sq ft, eight-storey office development on the opposite bank of the River Irwell to Spinningingfields.

Funded by Legal and General, the development is part of the New Bailey project which also includes a 615-space multi-storey car park, currently under construction and a 143-bed Premier Inn.

The Premier Inn, which was built by Bowmer & Kirkland, was completed last month and is due to open in November 2014. One New Bailey occupies the site of the former Ralli Courts building which has now been demolished.

Buro Four is the contract administrator and DTZ and JLL are joint agents on the scheme, which is due for completion in spring 2016. ECf is a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal and General and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

PROPERTY law firm Davitt Jones Bould (DJB), is running a free three-hour session at Barclays’ Manchester office in Spinningfields next month.

It hopes to attract up to 80 people to the event which will focus on recent statutory and case law developments.

This will include: a review of recent changes to business rates and empty properties liability; the latest case law and background to the Competitions Act 1998; and an update on Landlord and Tenant issues generally including dilapidations, claims against administrators, and the application of the Commercial Rent Arrears Recovery rules.

The session is open to all commercial property lawyers in the Manchester area, both private practice and in-house. It will be hosted by Steve Lewis, Barclays’ relationship director for professional services, Steve Lewis, and presented by DJB’s Richard Snape.  This event is one in a series that Barclays is hosting to support clients in the professional services sector. ERIC Wright Special Projects, a division of the Preston-based Eric Wright Group, has built a new café and community hub in the grounds of St Catherine’s Hospice, Chorley, Lancashire.

It was designed by Cassidy + Ashton and and has been built on the site of a former 19th century cotton mill.

Construction works, which started in November 2013, included demolition, installation of a new roof, windows and lift; erection of block walls, partitions and suspended ceilings; and internal decoration and fit out, as well as vinyl and carpet floor finishes.

Construction manager Mark Smith said: “We were delighted to be given the opportunity to work on this project for the hospice, from start to completion it has been an excellent team effort from the client, designers to all the sub-contract trades involved working together to produce this excellent facility which will be a huge success for St Catherine’s.”
