8,500 Salford homes to be transferred to Salix

COUNCIL tenants in Salford have voted in favour of the transfer of 8,500 properties to Salix Homes.

The deal means the end of council housing in Salford with Salix Homes moving from an arms length management organsiation to a housing association.

The council argued it was the only way funds could be accessed to cover the cost of a large scale revamp. Salix is planning to invest £75m over the next five years. It is in the process of securing bank finance and does not plan to approach the bond market like some housing associations.

All the city’s former council homes have now been transferred with City West and Pendleton Together now holding the other properties.

Just over 61% of tenants voted in favour and 38.6% were against the move. Total turn out was 58%.

Salford’s Mayor Ian Stewart said: “This is a great result for Salford. Tenants have voted for more investment and this will result in better homes for them and for generations to come. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to see all homes improved and brought up to a decent standard.”

The houses affected by the transfer are in central Salford, Rainsough Brow and Beechfarm.
