Manufacturing space approved at Omega

APPROVAL has been granted for the first manufacturing space at Omega, the development at the former Burtonwood air base near Warrington.

Omega Warrington Ltd (OWL), a joint venture between Miller and Royal Bank of Scotland-owned KUC Properties, wants to build a 200,000 sq ft warehouse with 20,000 sq ft of offices, 240 parking spaces and 49 truck spaces in the southern part of the scheme.

The development would take up a 10-acre plot in Zone 7, north of Orion Boulevard where a further 10 acres are also earmarked for manufacturing space.

OWL has an occupier whose identity has not been disclosed. It is thought to be a French manufacturer.

The plans were approved under reserved matters, which mean they did not go through the council’s planning committee, because outline permission has already been granted.

But there was an objection from Royal Mail which has a depot employing 700 staff opposite the plot. It is concerned about the frequency of truck movements and the entry point on Orion Boulevard.

Zone 7 also includes a 600,000 sq ft, £100m distribution base for Asda which is the biggest single European investment by parent company Walmart, and work is due to start on a 680,000 sq ft logistics base, believed to be for online retailer The Hut. At the 80-acre plot north of the motorway there are distribution bases for catering group Brakes, Hermes Parcelnet, and Travis Perkins.
