City look to boost Nike deal as profile soars

MANCHESTER City are set to open negotiations talks with sportswear giant Nike with a view to extending and enhancing its existing kit deal.

The Premier League champions  are halfway through a six-year contract worth about £12m a year, which was agreed in May 2012.

Since then, City have won the Barclays Premier League title twice, become a regular participant in the Champions League, and built its international profile with the launch or acquisition of sister clubs in the US, Australia and Japan.

With the club’s commercial value on the up, commercial chiefs at the Etihad Stadium are keen to renegotiate the deal with Nike and are said to be looking for more than £20m.

Nike is reportedly keen to retain City, having lost Manchester United and Arsenal from its roster of Premier League clubs in the past two years.

The market rate for kit deals has also jumped since City signed their last deal.

Last year Manchester United agreed a world-record £75m with adidas, while  Arsenal’s contract with Puma is worth £30m annually and Liverpool have a £25m a-year deal with US firm Warrior.
